THE MAGNIFICENT GATEWAY TO PEACE[1]

Ephesians 1:3-14

 

A.        The Magnificent Gateway to Peace, 1:3-14[2]

 

3  Blessed[3]  be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has

blessed[4] us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places[5] in Christ[6],

4  Just as He chose[7] us in Him[8] before[9] the foundation of the world, that

we should be holy[10] and blameless[11] before Him.  In love

5  He predestined[12] us to adoption[13] as sons through Jesus Christ to

himself, according[14] to the kind intention of His will,

6  [15]To the praise of the glory of His grace, which He freely bestowed

on us in the Beloved. 

7  In Him we[16] have redemption[17] through His blood, the forgiveness[18] of

our trespasses, according[19] to the riches of His grace,

8  Which He lavished upon us.  In all wisdom and insight

9  He made known[20] to us the mystery of His will, according to His

kind intention which he purposed[21] in Him

10  With a view to an administration suitable to the fulness of the times,

that is the summing up[22] of all things in Christ[23], things in the heavens and things upon the earth.  In Him

11  Also we have obtained an inheritance[24], having been predestined

[20] What? The secret of revelation redemption reason

[21] How?  The believer’s need is not to receive more, but to do more with what he has.

[22] Why?  Jew, Greek, male, female, rich, poor, black, white, labor, management, democrat, republican, Arab, Israeli.

[23] The force that unites us, His will, His purpose, His administration.

[24] God’s perspective, the ground of redemption.  Certain of happen,  common agreement,  common life,  common inheritance,  Romans 15:5-7, Romans 8:17.


according to His purpose who works all things after the counsel of His will[1],

12  To the end that we who were the first to hope in Christ should be

to the praise of His glory[2].

13  In Him[3], you also, after listening to the message of truth, the gospel

of your salvation[4] - having also believed, you were sealed[5] in Him with the Holy Spirit of promise,

14  who is given as a pledge[6] of our inheritance, with a view to the

redemption[7] of God’s own possession, to the praise[8] of His glory.

15  [9]For this reason[10] I too, having heard of the faith in the Lord Jesus

which exists among you[11], and your love for all the saints,

16  do not cease giving thanks for you, while making mention of you in

my prayers;

17  That the God of our Lord Jesus Christ[12], the Father of glory, may give to you[13] a spirit of wisdom and of revelation in the knowledge of Him[14].

18   I pray that the eyes of your heart[15] may be enlightened[16], so that you

may know[17] what is the hope[18] of His calling, what are the riches[19] of the glory of His inheritance in the saints,


 


[1] The grantor of redemption.  Plan,  wish.

[2] The goal of redemption.

[3] Look at Jesus where he was.  Lift your eyes to see where he is.  Measure that distance by the sweep and lift of the Almighty arm.

[4] Four suggestions about possession:  Don’t let your feelings fool you;  don’t be discouraged by frequent, repetitious temptation; don’t think you must have superhuman power; cut your conversation with the old landlord short.

[5] The guarantee of redemption.  Permanent.

[6] Earnest

[7] The Bible’s story in a single word.

[8] The focus that keeps, v. 6, v. 12, v. 14.

[9] Prayer for Peace, 1:15-23.  Peace of...wisdom v. 17, revelation v. 17, heart v. 18a, calling v. 18b, inheritance v 18c, power v. 19, strength v. 19, might v 19, of Him v 23b.  That we may have a greater understanding of...

[18] The sovereign act of God leading to salvation, Rom. 11:29; I Cor. 1:26; I Cor. 7:20.  The hope: anticipation known because of salvation.

[19] The riches: I Peter 1:4; Rev. 7:9-17.



19  And what is the surpassing greatness of His power[1] toward us who believe.  These are in accordance with the working of the strength of His might[2]

            20  Which He brought about in Christ, when He raised Him[3] from the

dead, and seated Him[4] at His right hand in the heavenly places,

            21  Far above[5] all rule and authority and power and dominion, and every

name that is named[6], not only in this age, but also in the one to come.

            22  And He put all things in subjection under His feet[7], and gave Him as

head[8] over all things to the church[9],

            23  Which is His body, the fulness of Him who fills all in all.
